a) Objectives of geotechnical site characterizations / tunnelling

  • Mapping of soil/rock weakness and decompaction zones
  • Imaging tectonic faulting and soil deposition structures
  • Delineation of bedrock surface and topography

Recommended methods

  • Hybrid seismic surveying (universally applicable, most suitable & most cost efficient)
  • MASW (for mapping the shear wave velocity field, for higher resolution in the uppermost 20 m)
  • Shear wave refraction survey (for mapping s-wave velocity field, rarely used due to high costs)

b) Assessment of ground stability in karst and subrosion areas

  • Detection of voids and hidden sink holes
  • Detection of potential ground failures and subsidence zones
